Champs Hillview try to stay in race against leaders

By Roger Seepersad

Hillview College’s chances of retaining their PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League (SSCL) title are already very slim and today it could disappear altogether.

The reigning champions who are sixth on the ten-team standings with 66 points, face current leaders Vishnu Boys Hindu College (94 points) at Esmeralda Recreation Ground from 10 a.m. today needing a win to keep their title aspirations alive.

A fifth consecutive outright win for Vishnu, who were promoted to the Championship Division this season, will effectively end Hillview’s chances of lifting the trophy, however with two rounds of matches to go after today, the title race could still be open.

Barrackpore West Secondary are right behind the leaders with 81 points and will face seventh placed El Dorado East Secondary (53 points) at Honeymoon Park, El Dorado in what will be a must-win game for both teams.

For Barrackpore, they need a victory to stay within striking distance of the leaders after losing ground last week when they fell to the other title-chasing team, Presentation College Chaguanas, who are now third on the standings with 79 points.

El Dorado are also in need of points to distance themselves from the relegation zone. They are only eight points from ninth placed Fatima College and ten away from last placed Naparima Boys College.

The last two teams on the standings will be demoted to the Championship Division at the end of the season.

The feature match in the Championship Division will see second placed St Mary’s College (95 points) taking on third placed Iere High School (92 points) at Syne Village in Penal, while leaders ASJA Boys’ College San Fernando (99 points) take on eighth place Pres San Fernando (34 points).

The top two teams in the Championship Division will earn promotion to the Premier Division for next season.

All matches bowl off at 10 a.m. today.
