The Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 cricketers arrived in Tobago yesterday to defend their regional title and Dejourn Charles, the only Tobagonian in the side, wants to play a key role in his team’s campaign. T&T open the third annual WICB/THA Regional Under-17 50-over tournament on Tuesday at Louidore, against Barbados, before going up against Jamaica at Bon Accord on Tuesday.
Charles said that the local support was good last year and is calling on the people of Tobago to come out and support them as they go for their second straight title. “Being part of the side last year pushed me to try and do better this year. Last year I took some spectacular catches in front of my home crowd which spurred my side on the win the tournament. I am a senior player on the team this year so I know I will have to up my performance to ensure we do retain the trophy,” the tall left-handed number three batsman added.
Speaking about the Bryan Boodram-led side, Charles said most of the players know each other well after coming up through the national Under-13 and Under-15 ranks. “The team is confident and we are bonding well with each other so all we have to do now is go out there and perform. I hope everybody can come out and support me and the team and hopefully we can win. “Home support is very important because it gives us a lot of confidence and motivation to go out there and do our best,” Charles added.
