Clarke Road, Merry Boys reach T20 quarters

By Roger Seepersad

Fast-bowling all-rounder Teshawn Castro grabbed five for 11 to lead defending champions Esmeralda Sports to a narrow two-run win over Tobago side Club Crusoe in one of three matches played yesterday in the UWI Twenty20 tournament at Sir Frank Worrell Ground, St Augustine.

In the second match on the day, Anthony D’andrade hit 44 to lead Esmeralda to a competitive 138 for nine. Club Crusoe reached 136 for nine in reply as Esmeralda booked their place in the quarter-finals. Navin Stewart, lining up with Club Crusoe, took three for 27 and scored 19 runs.

Moosai Sports also made it to the next round after defeating T&T Prisons by 30 runs in the 10.30 a.m. match yesterday.

Queen’s Park Cricket Club were scheduled to meet UTT in the 6.30 p.m. game yesterday.

Merry Boys are also through to the quarters following their 59-run win over Central Sports on Friday night.

Akeem Alvarez led the way with 61 as Merry Boys tallied 201 for seven when they batted first. Aneil Kanhai and Amir Jangoo chipped in with 44 and 43 respectively.

Central Sports were dismissed for 142 in reply with left-arm spinner Javed Ramdhanie taking four for 15.

First Citizens Clarke Road United also reached the next round after their first round opponents Defence Force pulled out of the tournament.

Clarke Road still took the field on the opening day of the tournament on Friday with Ahmed Mohammed slamming 128 off 41 balls to lead to a 44-run win over UWI in a warm-up fixture.

The opener reached his half century off just 18 balls and got to triple figures off 32 balls, smashing six fours and 15 sixes.

UWI could only muster 149 all out off 18.3 overs with Mohammed grabbing three for 11.

The result did not matter as Clarke Road would have already booked their place in the quarter-finals.

UWI play their first competitive match in the tournament today against Caldrac Club from 2.30 p.m.

Munroe Road face Fulham in the 10.30 a.m. today while PowerGen Penal and Jenexcon Tableland square off in the 6.30 p.m. match.
