Crime Of Passion a ‘Diamond’ in the rough
CRIME OF PASSION, a diamond in the rough, should be sparkling after the running of today’s 1,350-metre NGC Diamond Stakes - the supporting eighth race on the NGC CNG Trinidad Derby Stakes card at Santa Rosa Park.
USA-based rider Rajiv Maragh will partner the chestnut three-year-old son of Lawyer Ron in the Grade Two extended sprint for trainer John O’Brien, who won this race last year with Bruceontheloose. That contest was considered one of the best performances by ‘Bruce’, who succumbed to a bout of colic in January this year.
The Raroma Stable-owned colt shot into prominence when slamming former winner Signal Alert in the 1,200-metre Santa Rosa Dash, making all the running from his one-gate draw by a comfortable 6 1/2 lengths eased down. Today he comes up against a makeshift bunch of sprinters, as the only recognised sprinter in the contest is Signal Alert. But he is not at the top of his form at the moment while his stablemate Readbetweendlines is scratched.
Creoles Unquestionable, and last year’s Derby winner Free Passage are in the line-up, but they are not open Graded sprinters and pose no threat to Crime Of Passion, while Golden Dixieland is a router, but gets an opportunity to earn an easy cheque.
Sacred Trust, winner of the New Year’s Day Sian’s Gold Sprint on the turf was also beaten by Crime Of Passion in the Santa Rosa Dash, but should form the trifecta, while Lang Amour is outclassed among these runners.
Crime Of Passion should score unchallenged to give (R) Maragh his first success in T&T.
The Derby Day card is always competitive, and with a mix of turf and dirt racing, patrons will be treated to an exciting day. They will see the top USA-based rider Javier Castellano in action, riding alongside Canadian-based local hero Emile Ramsammy, champion jockey Brian Boodramsingh, Wilmer Galviz, Nobel Abrego, Jamaica’s Shane Ellis, and Barbadian Antonio Whitehall. Venezuelan Castellano’s first ride is aboard Woden in the sixth race, and he should open his account in this event for owner Shivam Maharaj.
Castellano’s other mount, Readbetweendlines is scratched in the Diamond Stakes but could get a replacement ride in the same event, while Maragh is expected to bring down the curtain with O’Brien’s Tradition Girl, but could be stopped by Heidi’s Tzippi.
Post time for the day’s opener on the 11-race card is 10.45 a.m.
