Cubans beaten in Pan Am quarters

BOTH Group A teams were beaten in the quarterfinals when the Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup continued Tuesday night in Mexico. After finishing third in the group two days earlier, the Cubans, winners of this tournament a record four times, went down 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-19 against Group B runners-up Argentina.

And after placing third in Group B, Puerto Rico whipped Group A runners-up Canada 25-17, 25-16, 30-28 for the other place in last night’s semi-finals.

The Puerto Ricans tackled two-time defending champs United States and Argentina opposed Dominican Republic after press time and the final is scheduled for tonight.

Dominican Republic, ranked eighth in the world, and world No. 2 United States, had advanced straight into the last four after topping Groups A and B, respectively.

VBefore last night’s semis, Peru and Costa Rica clashed for ninth place and Mexico faced Colombia for seventh place.

Colombia stunned Peru 25-21, 25-23, 25-20 on Tuesday, while hosts Mexico were 25-10, 25-22, 25-17 winners over Costa Rica.

Trinidad and Tobago, the lowest-ranked team in the tournament at No. 31 in the world, lost all five matches in the round-robin phase to finish at the bottom of Group A. since there were only five teams in the other group, there was no playoff and they ended up 11th and last.

The five-time Caribbean champion will host Costa Rica, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama in a qualifying tournament in the middle of next month and the winning team will earn the 24th and final ticket to the World Championships, which serves off in Italy on September 23.
