D'Abadie Youths preserved their unbeaten record in the Trinidad and Tobago Table Tennis Association (T&TTTA) 2nd Division League when they crushed University of the West Indies (UWI) 4-0, at the D'Abadie Community Centre, on Saturday.
Carlisle Cleveland sent D'Abadie ahead with a 7-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-7 triumph over Aqib Harford. Declan John beat Ronald Williams at 9, 7 and 7 to double the advantage for the home team.
George Belfon made it 3-0 with an 11-2, 11-3, 11-4 whipping of Sanchez Mangaroo. John and Belfon then combined for victory in the doubles, the D'Abadie pair outlasting Harford and Vidal Sarwan 8-11, 11-2, 11-6, 10-12, 11-5.
With the first round drawing to a close, D'Abadie are the only team without a defeat, winning seven of their eight fixtures and drawing the other.
Following Saturday's blanking of UWI, D'Abadie led the 11-team standings with 23 points. However, Arima Hawks had the opportunity to take over the lead, late yesterday. The Hawks were away to UWI in a fixture the Arimians were tipped to win. Hawks are also the favourites in today's showdown with Solo Crusaders "A", at the Arima West Government Primary School. First serve is at 7.30 p.m.
In another fixture, late yesterday, Montrose United hosted University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT).
At 7.15 this evening, Crusaders "B" face Carenage Blasters at the Himalaya Club in Barataria.
On Sunday, in Arima, Blasters suffered their third defeat in the league, going under 4-1 to Hawks. For the home team, Rawle Parsons beat Nigel Morgan 11-7, 11-8, 11-8, Brittany Joseph cruised past David Gilkes 11-2, 11-7, 11-3, Linda Partap-Boodhan brushed aside Dion Carrington at 5, 1 and 5, and Joseph and Partap-Boodhan combined for an 11-7, 9-11, 11-7, 5-11, 11-7 doubles victory over Rakellon Pierre and Gilkes. Pierre was the only winner for Blasters, the former top junior getting the better of Wayne Oudit 11-9, 11-9, 10-12, 11-5.
At the Maloney Indoor Complex, on Sunday, UTT defeated the T&T girls' under-15 team 4-1 and T&T boys' under-18 "B" 4-2, but drew 3-3 with the T&T boys' under-15 team. For the under-15 boys, Jesse Ramgoolie outlasted Siddiq Ramsingh 14-16, 11-4, 11-4, 4-11, 11-9, while Daniel Henriques whipped Reena Deosaran 11-4, 11-0, 11-4, and brushed aside Ramsingh at 6, 4 and 3. Davone Joseph and Lawrence Ince won for UTT. Joseph beat Brandon Lee Young 11-4, 11-5, 8-11, 11-8, Ince stopped Jabari Garraway 11-5, 11-5, 11-4, and Joseph and Ince combined for an 11-7, 11-4, 11-5 triumph over Lee Young and Garraway.
Also at Maloney, on Sunday, Crusaders "A" notched their first victory in the league, Richard Young, Merle Baggoo, Catherine Spicer and Billy Guo teaming up to blank the T&T under-15 girls 4-0.
Making a comeback to competitive table tennis after a 38-year hiatus, Baggoo, the 1963 national women's singles champ, enjoyed an impressive 11-3, 11-6, 11-5 victory over Chelsea Fong.
Crusaders "A" were also 4-0 winners against T&T boys' under-18 "B". Spicer was outstanding for Crusaders, the 18-year-old player upsetting Andreus Abraham 11-9, 9-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-6, and combining with Kwame Laurence for an 11-9, 11-7, 12-10 doubles triumph over Che Pierre Fournillier and Kourdell Powell. Laurence defeated Powell 11-4, 14-12, 11-5, and Young stopped Fournillier at 8, 6 and 8 for the other Crusaders wins.
