Notre Dame took advantage of QPCC’s inaction to leap to the top of the Trinidad and Tobago Hockey Board standings over the weekend. At the National Hockey Centre in Tacarigua on Saturday, Notre Dame edged Fatima 2-1 to gain the lead on 19 points, one ahead of QPCC who had no matches scheduled on the weekend.
National player Shaquille Daniel opened the scoring in the 21st minute while teammate Ishmael Campbell added the second in the 34th as the Dames jumped out to a 2-0 advantage at the half. Fatima’s Jordan Vieira pulled back a consolation in the 44th but Fatima failed to find the equaliser.
In the women’s competition, Notre Dame moved into second as leaders Paragon remained out front even though they played no matches over the weekend. Paragon (13 points from five games) are now followed by the Dames who are on 11 from six games with Shandy Carib Magnolias third on nine (points) from six.
Notre Dame played to a 1-1 draw with Magnolias last Friday night with Blair Wynne neutralising Sekayi Linurd’s earlier strike for a share of the points. But on Sunday, Notre Dame was an emphatic winner over Ventures in a 8-0 trashing. Dana De Gannes, Vanessa Chewitt and Caryl Whiteman each scored doubles while Wynne and Kayla Brathwaite netted one a piece.
