Defending champs beat T&T
TRINIDAD and Tobago were beat-
en in straight sets again when the Men’s Pan American Volleyball Cup continued on Tuesday in Mexico.
After losing to the hosts when the tournament served off the day before, the top-ranked Caribbean outfit came up against NORCECA (North, Central America and the Caribbean) powerhouse United States and went under 25-14, 25-10, 25-20 against the defending champions in Group B.
The defeat left T&T with the daunting task of upsetting the Dominican Republic last night to have any chance of reaching tonight’s quarter-finals.
The US have been virtually unstoppable in this tournament, with five gold medals and a silver from six appearances, but the Dominican Republic pushed them to five sets on Monday.
Dominican Republic were then favoured to get by Mexico on Tuesday night but lost 18-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-23 to the home team.
After a bye on the opening day, Argentina began their campaign in fine style by beating Puerto Rico 18-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-18 in Group A.
Brazil held Puerto Rico on Monday and clashed with Argentina last night to determine the group winners. The US opposed Mexico for the top spot in the other group, with the winners of these two matches headed to tomorrow night’s semis.
The runners-up will come back tonight to do battle in the quarters, along with the third-placed teams in the groups.
The champions will be crowned on Saturday night.
The highest-placing team not already qualified for next year’s FIVB (International Volleyball Federation) World League will earn a ticket to the World League Qualification Challenge Event.
