Diego, Tigers win

By Kern De Freitas

So close, yet so far.

That phrase might resonate with Trinity College for quite a bit after Diego Martin North Secondary evicted them from the Coca Cola InterCol North Zone with an 8-7 at the penalty spot.

They will meet St Anthony's College in next week's North final after the "Tigers" edged St Mary's College 5-4, also from the penalty spot, in yesterday's second match of the Hasely Crawford Stadium doubleheader.

Already condemned to the Senior Division next season after they were previously beaten twice by "Diego" this season, Trinity would have felt things were going their way for once on the large Hasely Crawford Stadium outfield.

But having struggled for a chance at goal in the 90 minutes, much less match Trinity, Diego Martin kept searching, and found the vital equaliser to force a 1-1 deadlock at the end of regulation time and give themselves a shot their first zonal InterCol final.

Keston Frederick provided that hope, poking home from close range when given space in stoppage time to cancel out Christon Gaspard's fifth minute strike.

Most of the drama, though, came at the end of the match, particularly in the kicks from the penalty mark.

It took shots from all 22 players to settle the matter. Kicking first, Diego North scored their first three attempts, while Trinity missed their first. Still, they were level at the end of their allotted five.

Then the ascendency see-sawed as the teams matched each other in sudden death kicks from the penalty mark; both scored, then missed twice, including Frederick, who had to be consoled, first by a teammate, then by Trinity's misses.

Diego then made their final three, meaning that defender Ebunulowa Simeon had to step up to keep Trinity in it. But the attempt was too close to Diego Martin goalkeeper Perry Lee O'Connor, who slapped the ball away, then tore off the field to celebrate victory.

In South Zone action, Presentation College San Fernando and St Benedict's College reached the South semis at Manny Ramjohn Stadium yesterday with 4-1 wins over Mayaro Secondary and Princes Town West Secondary respectively.
