Dominican Republic stop T&T amateurs

NATIONAL amateur boxing champions Michael Alexander and Aaron Prince were the high performers for Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday night against a contingent from the Dominican Republic.

The two top local amateurs, along with Shem Gloud, were the only winners as T&T lost 4-3 to a tough Dominican Republic squad at Cosmic Boxing Club, Marabella.

The competition is the latest in a series of warm-up internationals to prepare the Trinidad and Tobago team for the 2012 Olympic Qualifiers Of the Americas to be held In Brazil from May 4-16.

Trinidad and Tobago have rotated their fighters during the warm-up series, in which they have beaten Guyana (4-1) but lost to Barbados (3-2) and the Dominican Republic.

The T&T boxers will next face Puerto Rico, before heading to Brazil for the Olympic Qualifiers.

On Thursday night, lightweight Alexander was too much for his formidable Dominican Republic opponent, Charlie Almonte, while welterweight Prince was at his competitive best and got the better of his opponent, Alberto Puello. Light-heavyweight Gloud got by the Dominican Republic's Joaquin Berroa.

Losing for T&T were USA-based bantamweight Carlos Suarez, who was defeated by Ezequiel Urena, while USA-based Lawrence Singh was also scheduled to fight but had a high temperature and was not allowed to compete.

On the night, the Dominican Republic fighters looked more sharper, composed and disciplined than the Trinidad and Tobago fighters. However, Alexander, Prince and Gloud stepped up and saved T&T's team.
