Doubles semi-final day at 'Tranquil'

By Shammi Kowlessar

TODAY is doubles semi-final day in the BG T&T Tranquillity Open Tennis Tournament at the club's court, Victoria Avenue, Port of Spain.

Breana Stampfli captured both the women's and mixed doubles crowns last year and is in line to repeat in both events.

The 17-year-old and Donna Chin Lee will do battle with former national champions Leah Alcala and Trevine Sellier in the doubles semis.

Alcala will also be on the opposite side of the net from Stampfli — and Dunstan Denoon — in the mixed doubles semis after she and Jovani Lewis were 6-2, 6-2 winners over Jemel Harris and Celine Ramsumair yesterday.

Three mixed doubles quarter-final matches were on yesterday's schedule, but at press time, Aaron Soo Ping Chow and Aryanne Hart had just taken the court to face Nkrumah Patrick and Makalah Goodridge.

The winners will oppose Richard McLetchie and Chin Lee after the fourth seeds edged No. 5 seeds Richard Chung and Sarah Escalante 6-1, 3-6, 10/6 yesterday.

Escalante is still alive in the doubles and she and fellow under-18 player Bridgette Garcia will be up against last year's runner-up Christine Alcazar and Cindy Kabli in the second doubles semi.

Soo Ping Chow and Nabeel Mohammed moved into the men's doubles semis with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over fellow juniors Jabari Davidson and Keshan Moonasar yesterday.

The No. 7 seeds will play the top seeds and defending champs Yohansey Williams and Vaughn Wilson, who did not have to take the court yesterday as Robert Le Hunte had work commitments.

The other semi will be between Elan Mendes and Jelani Davidson and second-seeded Tobagonians Denoon and Lewis.

The men's and women's doubles semis are scheduled for 4 p.m. and the mixed will follow.
