Emrit bags six on first day of practice match

Trinidad and Tobago all-rounder Rayad Emrit grabbed six wickets for just 33 runs to help dismiss the T&T Academy side for just 109 on the first day of their three-day practice match at the National Cricket Centre, Balmain Couva yesterday.

The T&T Representative XI, led by Emrit's six wickets, needed just 36.4 to dismiss the Academy side despite some resistance from Ewart Nicholson.

Nicholson, one of only two Academy batsmen to reach double digits yesterday--the other being wicket-keeper Nicholas Pooran who made 16--faced 86 balls in two hours of batting to make an unbeaten 65.

Nicholson hit one six off Ansil Bhaggan and three fours while Pooran hit two boundaries and faced 39 balls in his 45 minutes stay at the crease. But it was Emrit who shined brightest on a day curtailed by rain. The right-arm medium pacer took the first three wickets, starting with the first ball of the match when Jeremy Solozano was adjudged lbw for zero.

In the sixth over the Emrit sent back Isaiah Rajah (five) and Vikash Mohan (zero) with the score on 16. Rajah was caught behind by wicketkeeper Gibran Mohammed, while Mohan was caught at fourth slip by Evin Lewis.

Emrit's next three scalps also made zero—Adrian Cooper and Anthony Simmons both caught behind by different wicketkeepers and Jovan Ali trapped lbw.

Cooper faced nine balls before he was caught by Gibran Mohammed and Simmons faced 13 balls before he was caught by the second keeper, Steven Katwaroo.

In between that, Jason Mohammed grabbed two for seven, trapping Pooran lbw with the score on 94 and Khary Pierre caught by his Queen's Park Cricket Club skipper Justin Guillen at first slip for two.

In all, five of Emrit's wickets failed to get off the mark. The T&T Representative XI were 39 without loss off nine overs when rain forced an early end to the day's play.

Adrian Barath, who is seeking some form and consistency with the bat, was on 13 not out while Evin Lewis, who made his first-class debut in the 2012 regional season, was unbeaten on 17. The pair will resume their innings today, weather permitting.

T&T are currently preparing for the regional four-day competition which starts early next year. The four-day tournament gets going early in February.
