Five capture ‘Lease’ double crowns

By BY Shammi Kowlessar

FIVE players from a field of over 120 youngsters captured two titles each last week Sunday when the Lease Operators Ltd Junior Tennis Tournament concluded at Trinidad Country Club, Maraval.

Che Andrews and Aidan Carter were the members of the quintet who are not national junior singles champions as Victoria Koylass won the Under-12 title and Emma Davis and Scott Hackshaw both retained their Under-14 crowns during the Catch National Junior Championships in April.

Both Hackshaw and Davis won the Under-16 singles titles in this tournament. And after defeating arch-rival Emma Rose Trestrail in the final, Davis combined with the national Under-16 and 18 champ to overwhelm Joni-Mae Ammon and Cheyenne Chin Choy 6-3, 6-1 for the senior doubles crown.

Hackshaw and Davis’ brother Timothy came from behind to edge Keshan Moonasar and Under-18 singles champ Nkrumah Patrick 3-6, 7-6 (7/3), 10/7 in the boys’ equivalent final.

Singles champ Andrews and Tobagonians Kobe James defeated Luc Ramirez and singles runner-up Adam Escalante for the under-14 doubles title.

Carter and national Under-12 singles champ Kaiell George were 4-2, 5-3 winners over Ethan Jerry and Christian George in the doubles final.

Koylass completed the under-12 double when she and singles runner-up Yin Lee Assang recovered from a 4-0 first-set thrashing to edge Solange Skeene and Guatemalan Kristen Martiorena 4-0, 10/7 for the doubles crown.

Oseynonye Nwokolo attempted to complete a double, but the under-14 singles champ and Thalia Skeene were beaten 6-1, 7-5 by Brianna Lawrence and Jade Tom Yew in the doubles final.

After being stunned in the singles final by Charles Devaux, Kyle Kerry combined with Ethan Wong to defeat Josh Gonsalvez and Sebastian Sylvester 4-1, 5-3 in the Under-10 doubles final.

Declan Sheppard, Hugo Borde and Nico Auguste captured the Under-10, 12 and 14 consolation singles titles, respectively, while Stephanie Sirju was the junior girls’ consolation champ in the tournament, which was contested over two weekends.
