Flores School shine at US meet
Trinidad and Tobago’s Flores Taekwondo School excelled at the third annual Daedo-Truescore International Open in the United States recently, with all its students bringing home medals.
The school, coached by Master Sherland Flores, captured five gold, three sliver and two bronze medals in the tournament, which also featured competitors from Australia, Panama, Guatemala, Mexico, Dominican Republic and the US.
The competition was held at the Coronado Springs Resort in Disney World with the electronic Daedo-Truescore system in effect.
The scoring system uses electronic sensors to score points with sensors in the competitor’s socks, and protective padding.
A point is registered when the sock contacts with the chest protector with a preset level of force, with each different kick earning a different number of points. Any kick to the body earns one point if done straigh,t while a kick to the head earns three points if done straight.
If the fighter turns his body to the opponent to deliver the kick then an additional point is awarded as the level of difficulty is increased.
The gold medalists from the T&T school were Saurav Ramnarine, Ashton Kavir Boodhai, Priyanka Reemaul, Stacy-Ann Julien and Dorian Alexander.
