Adam Foley, newly-appointed national technical director of water polo, is set to have his first national tour of duty as he leads the Trinidad and Tobago delegation to the biennial CCCAN Championships in Puerto Rico from June 27 to July 2.
Foley was hired by the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SPORTT) in conjunction with the Amateur Swimming Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ASATT) to oversee the development of national teams and coaches.
He has been working with the various national teams for the past two months and will be assisted at the Puerto Rico tournament by longstanding national coach Alan Too-A-Foo.
Before coming to Trinidad, Foley was the water polo head coach at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States. He was coach there since 2007.
At 2009 CCCAN in Venezuela, T&T finished second overall in water polo, clinching silver in the 18 and Under Male division and bronze in both the 16 and Under Male and Female categories.
Trinidad and Tobago's results in the 16 and Under Male and 16 and Under Female divisions secured qualification to the Pan American Junior Games 2010.
This year, only two national teams will participate, the 17 and under male and female squads.
From the experience gained by the males at the South American (CONSANAT) Under-17 Water Polo Championships in Colombia in April, this team will be aiming for the gold medal at CCCAN.
While just missing out on the semi-finals by placing fifth, Trinidad and Tobago were the only team in the tournament to defeat eventual gold medallists and tournament hosts Colombia.
On the male side, the coach has opted for a 12-man team which includes CONSANAT top scorers Jonathan Gillette and Russell Ferreira.
Ten members of this team participated in the CONSANAT competition and will be hoping to use the South American experience, together with Foley's inputs on their game, to be victorious in Puerto Rico.
The female team has a good mix of experience and new blood with several members who were part of the team which won gold at CARIFTA last year and silver at 2010 CISC in Cuba.
Both the male and female teams will be using this competition to qualify for the 2011 Junior Pan American Water Polo Championships, which will also be held in Puerto Rico from August 3-14.
Trinidad and Tobago's CCCAN swimming and water polo teams will leave for Puerto Rico at 10:05 tonight via a Caribbean Airlines charter and return on July 3 at 11:10 a.m.
