Ian Woosnam, former Masters champion, is to line up for the Brian Lara Golf Challenge which tees off at the St Andrews Golf Club today and tomorrow and at the Millennium Lakes Golf & Country Club on Saturday.

This signature event, hosted by the Pearl & Bunty Lara Foundation, is in its second year with the inaugural tournament highlighting the golf skills of Lara, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham, former England and Manchester United player and West Indies cricket legend Gordon Greenidge. Last year’s event raised in excess of TT$170,000.00 which was disbursed to various charities.

This year, Woosnam is expected to have a duel with talented local golf professional Chris Richards, while Lara, Yorke and Greenidge will be joined by Sir Garfield Sobers, Desmond Haynes, former English cricketer John Morris and Mark Bright, a former English Premier League footballer in a match play battle for the Golf Challenge Trophy.

Today, the celebrities will play 18 holes of match play at St Andrew’s from 11 a.m. to provide the four players who will compete in the Golf Challenge semi-finals on the following morning. On Friday morning from 9 a.m., the semi-finalists will play nine holes of match play to decide the finalists who will be joined in the afternoon by representatives of the major sponsors competing for the Sponsors Cup.

The action will shift to Millennium Lakes on Saturday where 50 teams of two golfers will vie for ten pairs of attractive prizes using the two-ball better-ball format, with golfers playing off 75 per cent of their handicaps and scoring being done by the stroke-play method. On that day, there will also be a Mercedes Benz vehicle at stake for the first person to hit a hole-in-one on the 11th hole.

As part of the Foundation’s mission of giving back to the community, cricket, football and golf clinics will also be executed under the leadership of coaches David Williams (cricket), Brian Williams (football) and Ian Woosnam and Chris Richards (golf). The cricket and football clinics will take place at the Queen’s Park Oval today from 8 a.m. and the golf clinic will commence at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday at Millennium Lakes Golf & Country Club.

The tournament’s platinum sponsors are the Ministry of Sport, the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago and Blink|bmobile. Others supporting the venture are Angostura, Caribbean Airlines, EARTH, Brydens, Blue Waters, Hilton Trinidad & Conference Centre, Oakley, Hadar Lighting, Kanz Jewels and Mercedes Benz.
