Four Sunday League quarters spots on offer today

By Roger Seepersad

The final round of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board Premier Division Sunday League 50 over competition bowls off today at 10 a.m. with four quarter-final spots still up for grabs.

In Group A, four-time defending champions Queen’s Park Cricket Club have already qualified for the next stage while four other teams, Seenath’s Auto Bamboo Sports, Merry Boys, Caldrac Club and Munroe Road, who are all on six points, will be battling for the three remaining spots.

Bamboo, who won their first two matches in the tournament before losing to Merry Boys and Caldrac, will have a tough time against the Parkites at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain today with the hosts going for their fifth win of the competition.

The Parkites should have Indian Premier League star Kevon Cooper in their line up as well as T&T players Justin Guillen, Shannon Gabriel and Amit Jaggernauth.

Elsewhere Caldrac Club take on Munroe Road at Gilbert Park and Merry Boys host the winless Esmeralda at Diego Martin Recreation Ground.

In Group B, only one quarter-final spot is still up for grabs. Last year’s losing finalists PowerGen Penal, newly promoted Jenexcon Tableland and First Citizens Clarke Road United have all secured their places in the next round from the group with nine points each, while the other three teams, CLICO Preysal, Alescon Comets and Moosai Sports, are all on three points and will be fighting for the remaining spot.

Moosai host Preysal at Honeymoon Park, El Dorado while Comets, led by the in-form leg-spinner Imran Khan, who scored a century in the previous round, face Tableland at Pierre Road in Charlieville.

According to the TTCB regulations for the 50-over competition, in the event of teams finishing with equal points in their respective groups, the higher placed will be the team with the most wins, or if teams have equal points and equal wins, the team who were  winners of the match between the them.

If Moosai beat Preysal and Comets beat Tableland, then Comets will move into the quarter-finals having defeated Moosai in their group stage game. But if Preysal beat Moosai and Comets win, Preysal will qualify for the quarters having beaten Comets in the group stage.

The Championship Division Sunday League quarter-finals also take place today, with former Premier Division sides Aranjuez Sports and Evergreen in action at Aranjuez from 10 a.m.

In the other Championship Division quarter-finals, Petrotrin Sports host Cunaripo Sports at Petrotrin, Esperanza Sports take on Valiant’s at Esperanza and Prisons and Queen’s Park Cricket Club 2 meet at Prisons Ground.

All games start at 10 a.m.
