Fyzabad girls win InterCol T20

By Roger Seepersad

Fyzabad Secondary won their first PowerGen Secondary Schools InterCol Twenty20 final yesterday after defeating Barrackpore East Secondary by five wickets in the final at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre.

Fyzabad, electing to bowl first, restricted Barrackpore to 144 off their 20 overs before reaching 147 for five in reply off 18.5 overs.

Barrackpore were forced to go on the defensive early in their innings after they lost two early wickets in the second over.

But skipper Shania Abdool and opening batter Sarada Mahadeo rescued the innings.

Mahadeo slammed two fours and a six in her 30, which came off 50 balls to get Barrackpore back into the contest.

But it was the skipper who did most of the damage.

Abdool hit two sixes off Nikesha Babwah, then one off Dana Charles followed by two more sixes and a four in one over from Lilly Surajbally to get the Barrackpore fans back on their feet.

She hit two more fours to finish unbeaten on 46 off 32 balls. Extras amounted to 50 and no other batsman got to double figures.

Amanda John was the best bowler for Fyzabad with three for 24.

When Fyzabad batted, Alana John gave them a rocket start in the chase slapping 31 off 21 balls with five fours and one six in an opening stand worth 43 with Karissa Ramkissoon before being caught off the bowling of Hema Jagnanan.

Ramkissoon added a further 62 with Isabella Levine to take the total to 104 before she was run out in the 13th over.

Ramkissoon smashed 38 off 45 balls with two sixes and three fours to keep the momentum going before Levine and Nikesha Babwah brought Fyzabad to within sight of the victory with 25 needed off 24 balls and eight wickets in hand.

A mix-up saw Babwah run out for three in the 17 over before Amanda Nanan picked up two wickets in the 18th over to bring Barrackpore back into the match but it was too late as Amanda John slapped the winning runs to seal the win.
