Harvard edge Caribs for 'Solomon Hochoy' title

Harvard Sports Club picked up their first-ever Sir Solomon Hochoy Cup to open the 2012 season Saturday, defeating defending champions Caribs 12-7 in a tough final at the Queen's Park Savannah.

The Tragarete Road ruggermen reversed last year's result between the finalists—a 10-5 victory to the eventual League champions.

For Harvard, it was also a bit of revenge as Caribs pipped them in the last match for last year's Champion Division League title in November, after Harvard had beaten the perennial champs to take the lead.

Harvard head coach Larry Mendez, though, is not savouring the win too much. For him, the local rugby season has only just begun.

"We want to improve," said Mendez. "We've a long way to go to be the best team we can be, which is what this team wants to be. Its a great start but we have lots of work to do if we are to build on it."

Caribs begin the defence of their League crown on Saturday against arch-rivals Trinidad Northern in a TTRFU Championship division fixture.
