Harvard edge closer to Toyota title

Harvard Sports Club edged closer to breaking the reign of Caribs Rugby Club with a 37-15 whipping of Trinidad Northern, on Saturday at President's Ground in St Ann's, in Trinidad and Tobago Rugby Football Union (TTRFU) Toyota Championship Division action.

The Tragarete Road-based club maintained their lead over Caribs after beating Northern, the same team that stopped them at a similar point in the competition last year. On the weekend, though, Harvard showed more fight to come away with the win.

Tariq Cheekes, Ryan Hinckson, Rowell Gordon, David Gokool and skipper Claudius Butts were among the contributors to Harvard's victory.

After the match, Harvard coach Larry Mendez credited Northern with a strong first half challenge.

"Over the years Caribs and Trinidad Northern have dominated the championship division and T&T rugby," Mendes pointed out. "Northern have players with experience and good rugby brains. They are a good rugby team. It was tough going in the first half. We had to keep our heads and be patient.

"We have Royalians and Rainbow to play. Every game is a final. Winning the Toyota Championship is our goal and to achieve it requires hard work and constant improvement. There is no letting up. Our destiny is in our hands."

Caribs remained in second position and close behind Harvard, as they powered past Royalians 25-12 at the Queen's Park Savannah.

The Toyota Championship Division will take a one-week break before resuming on October 27, as the Police Sevens rugby tournament is scheduled for this coming weekend at St James Barracks.
