Humphreys, Burke for ‘Delph Memorial’ tourney

FORMER national champions Curtis Humphreys and Reeza Burke are among the players expected to compete in the Gordon Delph Memorial Table Tennis Tournament this evening at Central Diego Martin Community Centre, Jasper Avenue, Diamond Vale, from 6pm.

After winning four of the five major local tournaments last year, Humphries walked away empty-handed this season.

But the University of Trinidad and Tobago star is still the country’s top-ranked locally-based player and he finished second to Barbadian Trevor Farley in last week’s Super Singles Tournament after also being the runner-up in the Classified Championships and Silver Bowl Championships.

Burke lost to Humphreys and finished third in “Super Singles”, but the five-time national champ had edged his arch-rival when they had squared in the “Silver Bowl” final last month.

Also on the list of players expected to compete is Anthony “Sandfly” Brown, another former national champ, as well as Everton Sorzano, Michael Nanton, Kyle Borneo, Andrew Alexander, Terry Corbin and Declan John.

Women and be competing against men as the tournament, being staged by the Port of Spain Zone of the Trinidad and Tobago Table Tennis Association, is open gender.

West Bees Supermarket is assisting with prizes in the tournament, being held in the memory of Gordon Delph, a former Caribbean Under-17 and national champ who passed away less than two weeks ago at the age of 56.

The Super Singles Tournament was also played in honour of the former national coach.
