Hunte: It was 'not possible' to welcome home champs WI

The World T20-winning West Indies team were not welcomed home because the entire team did not return home together.

This is the explanation of West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) president Julian Hunte after a newspaper article appeared yesterday, questioning the Board's "snub" of the regional team.

WICB corporate communications officer yesterday issued a copy of a Hunte speech, dated March 10, which explained why the players were not formally welcomed by the board.

"It was not possible to do this after winning the World Twenty20 Championship, as the players went off in different directions around the world from Sri Lanka," the speech stated. "However I was pleased to have been in Sri Lanka as I was able to host a celebratory function for the team on the night of the win."

During the function at which Hunte made the speech, he also commended the returning West Indies women squad for their hard work that saw them shoot through the rankings to be the number two One-Day International team after reaching the World Cup final last month, where they lost to champions Australia.
