Jones puts Connection into CFU qualifying

By Kwame Laurence kwame.laurence@trinidadexpress.com

A single goal by Joevin Jones put new Digicel Pro League leaders W Connection into the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) qualifiers, leaving their opponents T&TEC in a battle for the other available spot.

At Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva on Tuesday night, Jones's brilliant 28th-minute free kick sewed up a 1-0 victory for Connection over the "Electricity Boys", and put them on top of the hotly-contested League standings.

The country's CFU representatives will be decided on the basis of who are the top two teams after the next round of matches.

T&TEC will now need victory over second-placed Caledonia AIA to earn their first trip to the qualifiers, while Adams Construction San Juan Jabloteh, the other contenders, have a tough match too, against Defence Force.

Before Tuesday's round of matches, T&TEC led the standings over Caledonia on goal difference, while Jabloteh (third) and Connection (fourth) were both a point behind.

But the loss for T&TEC, together with Jabloteh's 1-1 draw against Caledonia, puts Connection in pole position.

Caledonia (20 points) are now a point behind Connection in second, while T&TEC are third and Jabloteh fourth (both 19 points).

Defence Force continued their pursuit of fourth spot with a 3-1 victory over St Ann's Rangers, thanks to a Richard Roy hat-trick, including two items from the penalty spot on either side of half-time.

North East Stars too are on 12 points after a second half comeback, securing a 3-2 win over Police, who led 2-0 at half-time.
