La Romaine, Caledonia book quarter-final berths
The teams that contested the third place play-off in the first edition of the Ministry of National Security Hoop of Life Community Basketball League last year have booked their places in the quarter-finals of this year’s competition.
La Romaine defeated Guayaguayare 101-69 at Newlands Basketball Court, Guayaguayare, following up on their 88-85 home win against the same opponents on Tuesday night in the best of two contest.
The difference in game-two was the availability of the team’s captain and point-guard Derrick Boxill, who missed Tuesday’s match with a hand injury.
However, his presence changed their fortunes in the return match as he scored 30 points for La Romaine.
Boxill was well supported by Adrian Joseph, who scored 26 points, Devon Campbell, who had 14 and Delroy Agard who dropped in 11.
Young player Jerren Arneaud led the charge for Guayaguayare with 20 points and got support from Daryl La Foucade (15) and ReyonStraker, who chipped in with nine.
La Romaine will await the winners of the La Horquetta/ Mason Hall contest.
La Horquetta beat Mason Hall 104-74 in their first encounter at Mason Hall, Tobago, while game-two in La Horquetta on Tuesday night ended prematurely because of rain.
Elsewhere, Caledonia beat Sangre Grande 82-76 at Sangre Grande Recreation Ground, Ojoe Road, Sangre Grande on Thursday night.
Caledonia won the first match on Tuesday night at Paradise Heights, Morvant 77-65, but the hosts proved a handful in front of their fans despite trailing 24-25 in the first quarter of play.
The visitors went up 48-45 at half-time and maintained that lead.
Caledonia’s offence was spearheaded by Kyeon Joseph, who had 21 points while centre Allister Martin contributed 20.
Caledonia will face the winners of the St Joseph/Canaan Bon Accord Round of 16.
The Tobagonians won the first match 111-78 to take a 1-0 lead in the home and away two-game series.
