Laventille into quarters
Marabella’s quest for a second shot at the Hoop of Life championship worth $1.5 million dollars came to an end on Saturday night.
They were beaten by rivals Laventille 90-88 in game-two of the two-match series to crash out of the second edition of the Ministry of National Security Community Basketball League programme.
Both Laventille and Marabella contested the 2012-2013 final, which Laventille United won 2-0 and continued from where they left off in the team’s Round of 16 match-up. Laventille won the first match 100-77 last Monday at St Barb’s Basketball Court, Laventille.
In the return match, on Saturday night out at Vistabella Sports Complex, the hosts had to win by 24 points to deny Laventille a place in the last eight.
Instead it was the visitors who ensured that it was a close contest as the first quarter ended with both teams evenly matched at 24.
Marabella opened a five point lead at the halfway mark (50-45), and the tables then turned in the third session of play 69-65 in Laventille’s favour.
Ashton Demurrell and Steven “Lighter” Lewis scored 17 and 16 points respectively for Laventille, who will face with Santa Flora in the next stage.
For Marabella, forward Corey Pascal led all scorers with 32 points and centre Damian Caton sank 13.
