Lawrence keeps Clippers alive

Centre Shawn “Shorny” Lawrence followed up Thursday night’s 24-point, 12-rebound performance with 23 points and 13 rebounds 24-hours later, to help guide Caledonia Clippers to a 76-66 win over Petro Jazz in Game Three of the Mackeson Super 10 Basketball Big-Four semi-finals on Friday night at Southern Indoor Sports Arena, Pleasantville, San Fernando.

Playing to avoid elimination, Caledonia jumped out to 14-4 lead and never looked back.

The “Pride and Joy” of Morvant, took control of the first quarter 23-16 and went into  half-time leading just by a basket, 40-38. Clippers, who played a better game than in the two previous matches which saw them fall 0-2 in the best-of-five series, concluded the third session of play with a 56-62 lead and then outscored their hosts and silenced their supporters for almost the entire fourth stanza.

For Caledonia, Lawrence got valuable support from forward Wesley Vincent, who netted 18 points,  including eight unbroken free-throws, six of which were scored in the last 95 seconds of the match. He also pulled down four rebounds, while team-mate Akil Paynter, helped himself to 10 points.

For Jazz who trailed from the jump-ball, forward Kevin Garcia got 16 points and 11 rebounds before he fouled out in the fourth quarter. Adrian Joseph had 12 points and seven rebounds and Steve McSween added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Centre Dextroy Manswell, who came up big in Thursday’s win with 10 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks struggled with just four points, but got 12 rebounds and just one blocked shot for Jazz.

More crucially, Jazz’s prolific scorer Ako Pascal had a match low of just eight points and one rebound. He led the team in turnovers with seven.
