Leaders WASA stumble in Super League race

Defence Force kept the race for the blink/bmobile National Super League (NSL) title interesting and distanced themselves from the relegation zone both with one victory—a 3-0 whipping of leaders WASA FC on Sunday at WASA's St Joseph headquarters.

The Army/Coast Guard unit scored three second half goals—including a double from Killon Kirton in the 77th and 90th minutes after Dave Long opened the scoring in the 63rd—to cut the lead at the top to three points.

That means Defence Force, with 26 points, are now six clear of the relegation zone, occupied by Eagles United (20 points), Club Sando (19) and Biche United (14).

WASA (43) now have Westside Superstarz (40) three points behind them in second, and Joe Public FC (38) a further two points back, although the "Eastern Lions", despite their loss, have a match in hand. The "Water Boys" cannot afford another slip-up at home against St Joseph neighbours Real Maracas next weekend.

Westside kept on WASA's heels with a narrow 2-1 win over Santa Rosa at St Anthony's College in Westmoorings, former East Mucurapo Secondary skipper Kevon Piper scoring the late winner in the 86th minute.

Superstarz had to come from behind after Jovan Rochford opened the scoring for Santa Rosa in the 55th minute, before Troy Thompson produced the equaliser 11 minutes later.

Joe Public stayed in the title hunt with a comfortable victory 2-1 at Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya over Eagles United, who got a late consolation goal from Bernard McCall in the 88thminute. Joe Public led 2-0 for most of the second half after an Andre Toussaint (7th, 43rd) first half double.

Tobago duo 1976 FC Phoenix and Stokely Vale were both winners over Siparia Spurs and Biche United respectively and Maracas eked out a 2-1 win over Club Sando at Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.
