Leewards finally win one

Leeward Islands finally broke their duck in this year's Caribbean T20, earning a narrow four-run victory over Combined Campuses and Colleges after posting a barely respectable total of 127 at Beausejour Stadium in St Lucia yesterday.

CCC required seven runs off the last over, after Jason Holder calmed the CCC innings with two big sixes and a straight hit for four, with CCC needing 33 runs off the last 22 balls. But he was needlessly run out off the final ball of the 19th over, having backed up too far.

Kelbert Walters then delivered four dot balls, the third seeing Akeem Dewar run out for 13 (ten balls) by wicketkeeper Thomas from distance. CCC could only manage two off the final two deliveries, handing the Leewards their first win.

Both CCC and Leewards are out of the competition. The Leewards will sign off with this afternoon's match against Guyana at the same venue from 4 p.m., while CCC's last match is against Jamaica tomorrow.

CCC looked good for the win for almost the entire 20 overs. They lost Chadwick Walton (13) and two more men to the run out route, Kyle Corbin (one) and opener Raymond Reifer (17) to be 56 for three.

Floyd Reifer edged down the leg side for an innings-best 25, the same score debutant Sunil Ambris made before he was bowled by leg-spinner Anthony Martin.

Holder came out to ease CCC's anxiety, but after he was out, Leewards snatched an unlikely victory in the end.

After being asked to bat the Leewards managed their highest score of the 2013 tournament.

Their best partnership was 31 between West Indies opener Kieran Powell (19) and Chesney Hughes (22), after Lyndel Richardson (duck) was first to go, run out without a run on the board, and struggling skipper Sylvester Joseph facing ten balls for three.

Only Justin Athanaze (31, two sixes, two fours) and Gavin Tonge (25) helped the Leewards to a respectable total before Athanaze fell to a catch in the deep.

Tonge was last out in the final over, bowled by Jason Holder, who broke the middle stump.
