THE eight seeds will begin their campaign today when players battle for places in the men's singles quarter-finals of the BG T&T Tranquillity Open Tennis Tournament at the club's courts, Victoria Avenue, Port of Spain.
Yohansey Williams, the top-seeded 2011 champ, did not know his opponent at press time last night as Tobagonian Akiel Duke and qualifier Gianluc Robinson had not yet taken the court.
However third-seeded Vaughn Wilson, who helped fellow three-time Davis Cup player Williams capture the doubles title on Saturday, will play Keshan Moonasar after the youngster won the battle of the qualifiers, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 over Alexander Mukerji.
Dunstan DeNoon, the fourth-seeded mixed doubles champ and doubles runner-up, will come up against Jabari Davidson, a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Che Sanchez yesterday.
Davidson's younger brother Jelani whipped Leslie Moore and he could make life very difficult for No. 7 seed Richard Mcetchie today.
Luke De Caires, who made his Davis Cup debut and was surprisingly seeded as low as five, will come up against Krystan Valentine, a convincing 6-0, 6-1 winner over Jemel Harris yesterday.
Nabeel Mohammed will oppose sixth-seeded former national champ Richard Chung after his 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Shaquille Bernard, while veteran Harry Mahase gets eighth-seeded 15-year-old Elan Mendes after cruising past "lucky loser" Brandon Gregoire 6-2, 6-1.
Last year's runner-up Jovani Lewis, the No. 2 seed who lost in the doubles final on Saturday, will tackle the winner of last night's match between Andy Boyce and last year's senior veterans' (over-60 champ) Athelstan Phillips.
First serve is 4 p.m.
