Maloney beat Laventille 89-61 to lead semifinal series
Maloney upset Laventille 89-61 in game one of their Hoop of Life Community Basketball semifinal, in Maloney on Wednesday night, to go 1-0 up in the best-of-two series for a place in the $1.5 million final.
Caledonia put themselves in a good position to clinch the other spot in the final after they beat La Romaine 82-79 in game one of their semifinal showdown, on Tuesday night in Morvant.
In Maloney, centre Shawn Lawrence led the charge for the hosts with 22 points in an overall commanding performance that saw him pull down more than a dozen rebounds and blocks shots to guide Maloney Is We to a comfortable victory.
Although they won on Wednesday night, Maloney would be mindful that in their quarterfinal match-up against Laventille last season, they won the first game at home 95-66 but were blown away in the return match in St Barb’s 96-63 to lose on aggregate by four points.
The return match is set for tomorrow at St Barb’s Basketball Court in Laventille from 7.30 p.m., and the hosts need to win by 29 points to move on to the final.
In Morvant on Tuesday night, Caledonia rallied from a 28-18 first quarter deficit to clinch the victory.
Kyeon Joseph dropped in 22 points for Caledonia, while Wesley Vincent added 20 and centre Allister Martin chipped in with 17.
For La Romaine, who will host Caledonia from 7.30 this evening, Derrick Boxill led all scorers with 27 points, while forward Adrian Joseph provided strong support with 23 and Delroy Agard added 16.
