Mc Leod, Baptiste make Youth Olympic standards

By Mark Pouchet

Atlantis Aquatics’ David Mc Leod and Marlins’ Jabari Baptiste achieved Youth Olympic qualifying times when the final session of the National Age Group Long Course Championships concluded at the Marlins Swimming Pool, Westmoorings Sunday night.

Mc Leod and Baptiste went 1-2 in the Boys 15-17 50 metres freestyle in 23.98  and 24.20 seconds to attain B standards for the Nanjing, China Games scheduled for later this year.

The times were also Carifta A and B standards respectively. On a night when local swimmers achieved 26 Carifta marks,  Jahmia Harley of Tidal Wave Aquatics won the Girls 11-12 200m backstroke with a time of two minutes, 44.94 seconds, a Carifta “B” qualifying standard time.

Harley went on to place second in the 50m freestyle, clocking 29.72, a Carifta  “C” standard in an event won by Jada Chai of Atlantis Aquatics who finished the race in a B standard of 28.97.

Chai dominated the 100m butterfly event, which was before the freestyle, clocking 1:07.53, well within the Carifta “A” qualifying time. Vrisnelit Faure (Areios Aquatechs), the lone female record-breaker at this competition, came in second to Chai with a 1:12.61 Carifta“B” standard.

In the Boys 11-12 age group,  Jae-Hwa Lee Wing (Tidal Wave)  claimed  the 200m back in a Carifta “C” standard time of 2.43.48  as Jean-Marc Granderson (2:45.29) of Blue Dolphins also achieved the standard.

In the 13-14 version of this event,  James Gillette (Marlins Swim Club) achieved a “B” standard time (2:23.50) when he took gold in the race. In the distance event, the 1,500m freestyle, his teammate and 800m free record-breaker Christian Marsden (Marlins) won with a time of 17:36.67 (“B” Standard) with Kael Yorke (Tidal Wave) earning silver behind Marsden, also with  a “B” qualifier (17:51.83).

Yorke showed guts to go on later  to win the 100m butterfly with a Carifta “A” time (1.01.02).

The Boys 11-12 100m butterfly included  three Carifta “C” qualifiers, Aqeel Joseph of Tidal Wave (1:10.85), Luke Gillette (1.12.16) of Marlins,  and Josiah Duke (1:12.66) of Tidal Wave in that order.

Baptiste (Marlins) won the  Boys 15-17 100m butterfly easily in  56.87, another  Carifta “B” qualifying time for him.

In swimming’s blue riband event, the 50m freestyle,  Amira Pilgrim (Atlantis) achieved a Carifta “B” time (28.41) in the Girls 13-14 category, while the Boys 13-14 top four finishers all posted Carifta “B” times. Osaze Riley ( 25.69) of Areios Aquatech won the event, Justin Samlalsingh (Centre of Excellence Sea Hawks) was second (25.80), James Gillette (Marlins) third (26.01) and Christopher Mohammed (Sea Hawks) fourth ( 26.12).

Kristen Julien achieved a  Carifta “A” standard in the Girls 15-17, 50m freestyle when she touched the wall in 27.26.

And in time trial events at the end of the session,  Jeron O’Brien (Tidal Wave) qualified for the Boys 15-17 100m  breast when be stopped the clock in 1:08.21.

His teammate Sabrina David also attained a Carifta qualifying time in a Girls 11-12 200m breaststroke time trial. ASATT will select the national team tonight for the Carifta Swimming Championships that splash off from April 21 to 27 in Aruba.
