Millennium Academy 3rd in Global Cup

Maloney-based Millennium Basketball Academy (MBA) finished third at the International Global Basketball Cup, which took place from August 15-18 at the ESPN Wide World of Sport Complex, Disney World, Orlando, Florida, USA.

Listed as Team Trinidad, MBA had a contingent of 13 players. Ex-Trinidad and Tobago player and coach, Lenny Guy was the team's technical director.

The tournament, contested in eight divisions, included teams from Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, Philippines and United States.

Competing in the boys' under-18 division, MBA played three matches in the round robin qualifying event. The T&T team opened with a 34-25 defeat at the hands of eventual champions Team Ocala (Florida).

Captain Joel Hinds scored 11 points for MBA, while 6-7" Tevon John netted four points and pulled down six rebounds.

MBA also lost to Tampa Bay-based Legacy La4 (37-30) and Miami-based Junior Kings (39-30) to finish last in the round robin event.

However, in the battle for third spot, the T&T team turned the tables on Legacy La4, winning 40-31. Patrick Scipio led the MBA scoring with 10 points, while Hinds and Justin Medina got seven apiece. Chike Augustine added six points and three crucial blocks.

In the championship match, Ocala defeated Junior Kings.
