Munroe Road tackle Comets

By Roger Seepersad

Defending Premier Division champions PowerGen Penal Sports Club sent a warning to the other clubs when they beat cross-town rivals First Citizens Clarke Road United by five wickets in their opening round match before Carnival.

This weekend they will be aiming for another dominant performance when they host Esmeralda Sports at Syne Village in Penal in round two of the competition bowling off at 10 a.m. today and continuing from 9:30 a.m. tomorrow.

Esmeralda were also victorious in their first round encounter, beating Caldrac by 164 runs at Gilbert Park in California.

PowerGen will be hoping for more runs from opener Nicholas Sookdeosingh who hit 150 in the opening round, and given Trinidad and Tobago’s fragile top-order, another big score from the left-hander could force the national selectors to look in his direction

In another interesting match this weekend, newly promoted Munroe Road Cricket Club, who beat CLICO Preysal in their opening game, take on Alescon Comets who were victorious against Seenath’s Auto Bamboo Sports two weeks ago.

Comets will be without a key ingredient in their recipe for success in all-rounder Imran Khan who is in the T&T squad for the four-day game against the Windward Islands.

Munroe Road will be banking on the destructive pair of Mahendra Nagamoottoo and Nishal Gayadeen to get them past Comets after the players took ten wickets each in their win over Preysal at Munroe Road Ground in the opening round.

Moosai Sports will be hoping to bounce back from their loss to Queen’s Park Cricket Club in the League and then in the 50-overs tournament when they face Merry Boys at home.

Moosai will also be banking on their bowlers to deliver. Their bowling will be led by left-arm pacer Tevin Robertson, who was called for national trials for the four-day team, along with medium pacer Jaron Alfred, spinner Vikash Mohan and former Barbados under-19 all-rounder Jed Yearwood.

Merry Boys fought back from a first innings deficit to beat Tableland in their first match and will be hoping for another fighting performance this weekend when they travel to Honeymoon Park in El Dorado.

In the other games this weekend, Clarke Road host Bamboo at Wilson Road in Penal, and Caldrac entertain Tableland at Gilbert Park in California.
