THE third stage of the 2014 NORCECA (North, Central America and the Caribbean) Beach Volleyball Tour will serve off today in Guatemala.
It will be the third weekend of action in a row since this year’s circuit served off in the Cayman Islands, and the second straight tournament in Guatemala.
The city of Antigua will host a NORCECA event for the first time this weekend, after the players competed in Guatemala City a week ago.
And for the third straight weekend, Trinidad and Tobago will be represented by Ayana Dyette, Nancy Joseph, Tarandath Deonath and Tevin Joseph.
It has been a struggle for them thus far. The inexperienced Tevin Joseph and Deonath, the last-minute picks who are using these events as preparation for the World Under-23 Championships in July in Cyprus, failed to win a match in the first two legs.
Even seasoned campaigners Dyette and Nancy Joseph, who combined four times last season and were able to reach as far as the quarterfinals once, have been unable to finish in the top ten this far.
However this country’s No. 1 pair is expected to improve as both players have placed as high as fourth twice in NORCECA events before.
Americans Heather Hughes and Cristal Engle, who beat Nancy Joseph and Dyette in the group stage and went all the way to the gold medal last weekend, are competing, along with men’s champs Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez of Cuba.
There are 16 male and 15 female teams from 12 countries— Barbados, Canada, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador. Honduras, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, T&T, United States, Guatemala —registered to compete in the three-day tournament.
