Narine sees T&T home in Super50

By Roger Seepersad

Trinidad and Tobago, aided by an unbeaten 28 from Twenty20 superstar Sunil Narine and a solid half century by Adrian Barath (65), defied another gutsy Guyana performance to clinch a close two-wicket win in their day-night Regional Super50 match at Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain on Monday evening.

Guyana were put on the ropes by some good bowling early in their innings as they slipped to 117 for seven after they were sent in to bat.

But just when it seemed like it was going to be an early night for the hosts, in stepped captain Christopher Barnwell and Devendra Bishoo who put on 107 for the eighth wicket to take Guyana to a decent 234 all out.

T&T replied with 235 for eight off 45 overs with contributions down the order.

Bishoo, who held up T&T in their four-day encounter with an unbeaten 47 just a few days ago, did the same in the limited overs game, this time going on to score his first regional Super50 half century. He made an undefeated 52 off 98 balls with four fours and a six.

Opposite him was Barnwell, who was dropped on the long-on boundary by Narine when he was on 31. The chance proved costly, as the all-rounder went on to top-score with 66 off 100 balls to give the Guyanese a fighting chance.

Bishoo matched Barnwell stroke for stroke as they repaired the damage done by Kevon Cooper's seamers. Cooper also sent back Ramnaresh Sarwan (22) and Leon Johnson (31) when both batsmen were looking set for big scores.

Cooper also tested Steven Jacobs, beating the edge of the Guyanese all-rounder's bat before finally getting the edge that went into the safe hands of Kieron Pollard at second slip with the score on 91 for four.

Narine's double strike in the 21st over put T&T in total control until Barnwell and Bishoo came together to frustrate the hosts.

When T&T batted, Lendl Simmons gave them a rapid start, hitting medium pacer Paul Wintz for two sixes, one of which sailed over the "Trini Posse" stand before he was trapped lbw by Barnwell for 13.

Barath looked in good form, middling the ball as he hooked, drove and cut with confidence to keep the T&T innings together.

He and skipper Dwayne Bravo put on 58 for the third wicket, with Bravo taking the attack to the bowlers with five fours before sending a catch to Wintz on the long-on boundary off the bowling of Zaheer Mohamed Shadir.

T&T were still on top at that stage and with Pollard walking out to the middle, the crowd expected some fireworks.

He settled in with 15 off 25 balls before Jacobs struck with his menacing off-spin.

Pollard offered the bowler a return catch with Jacobs diving low to his left to silence the packed Carib Beer Stand.

Jacobs got Barath in similar fashion, before teenage wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran got the fans back on their feet with a big six off Shadir that landed between the Carib Stand and the Brian Lara Pavilion.

He calmed a few nerves with his 12-ball 19 before Narine took T&T home.
