Defending champions Petrotrin battled to a 4-4 draw with Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force in the T&T Hockey Board (T&THB) Indoor Championships, at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo, on Saturday night, to stay at the top of the Men’s Open standings.
The oilmen—who also won on Friday, beating Paragon 5-2—completed the group stage with 14 points.
In the other Men’s match, on Saturday, QPCC edged Notre Dame 8-7 to go to ten points and second on the seven-team table.
On Friday, Brian Garcia scored a hat-trick in the last four minutes of the game to propel Petrotrin to victory.
Garcia scored in the 37th and twice in the 38th minute to open up a tight game. National forward Evan Farrell opened the scoring for Petrotrin in the fourth minute and scored another in the 25th after Syl Sinnette had levelled for Paragon in the seventh minute. Akim Toussaint scored for Paragon in the 40th minute.
Notre Dame joined Paragon on nine points after their 6-3 whipping of Malvern, led by a beaver-trick from national forward Shaquille Daniel, in the 22nd, 26th, 32nd and 33rd minutes. His T&T teammate, Aidan De Gannes got the other two goals for Notre Dame, in the second and 32nd minutes. But the Dames failed to push ahead thanks to their narrow loss to QPCC.
National youth players, Tariq Marcano (two) and Kristien Emmanuel were the players on target for Malvern, who suffered their fifth consecutive defeat.
In the Women’s Open Division, Tamia Roach scored a hat-trick for Notre Dame to squeeze past Maritime Harvard Checkers 5-4, earning the Dames their first points of the campaign.
National junior team player, Dana-Lee De Gannes and national senior Blair Wynne added one each for the Dames to end their four-match campaign with three points and in fourth spot. Checkers, with a hat-trick from former national defender Patrice Padmore, are still without a point with one match to play.
Defending champions Shandy Carib Magnolias, who have nine points, and Paragon and Ventures, both with six, have secured their berths in the semifinal stage.
