Police women just keep winning

Police continued their march for league honours when they defeated Chaguanas Lions 89-25 in the Women's Division of the MACKESON Super 10 Basketball League at the Jean Pierre Sports Complex on Tuesday night.

The match was one-sided from the start, with the League's best playing the League's worst team.

Police dominated the match in all departments and in all four quarters. They led 23-4, 45-7, 67-18 after three sessions of play.

Veteran national forward Tressia Brathwaite led the team with 31 points, a season-best, and also collected five rebounds. Kielle Connelly added 13 with eight rebounds and 11 points apiece came from Rhonda John-Davis and Nichelle Hinds.

For Lions, Kimberly James finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Meanwhile, Centre Alicia "Lizzy" Liverpool recorded a career-best 41 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Defence Force pulled out a 77-63 win over Diego Martin All Stars.

Defence Force entered the match with just two wins from seven matches but took a 19-9 first quarter lead. However, their team play fell apart as Diego Martin went on a 25-9 run to close the first half 34-28.

But the game swung in the second half, again this time in Defence Force's favour. When the third quarter ended, Diego Martin was adrift 54-48 and never recovered as coach Anthony Tannis  instituted a simple plan – "Give Lizzy the ball".

Liverpool, a six-foot-three, strongly built centre, delivered with 16 points in the fourth quarter. For the game, she scored 21 of her points from the free-throw-line.

For Diego Martin, the talented forward Anika Nottingham scored 27 points and the "pint-sized"  point-guard Shenelle Henry had 15.
