Pot Of Gold, Prince Zeshan spar ahead of Guineas

By The Guru

THE focus is now switched to the 1,800-metre Easter Guineas, first leg of the Triple Crown series, which will be run off on Monday April 1 at Santa Rosa Park, Arima.

And on Sunday morning, two of the main contenders, Prince Zeshan and Pot Of Gold sparred, while fellow-nominees War Of Words and Big Man stretched out separately.

Prince Zeshan, with Nobel Abrego in the saddle, and Flamingo Stakes winner Pot Of Gold, with Emile Ramsammy astride, breezed over 800 metres, the horses covering the trip in a good 51.65 seconds.

They both finished together, with Pot Of Gold appearing to be travelling best and drained out closer to the 600-metre pole.

Big Man, who finished a disappointing fifth in the "Flamingo", covered 1,000 metres with stablemate Becquerel and hoisted the white flag very early in the workout.

They did the trip in 1:04.99, with Becquerel very easy at the end.

Secret Circle, the lone two-turn winner among the West Indian-bred three-year-olds, had Flamingo Stakes runner-up Run Ron for company and this colt will run a very big race in the Guineas.

They paced in a good 1:10.94 over 1,000 metres.

Filly Salome was joined by stablemate Convoy and they breezed over 1,000 metres in 1:05.55, with Salome, who is crying out for distance, shaping up well ahead of the first classic.

Jose William-Samaroo's Right To Rule, fourth in the Ibis Stakes to Tennesse Hustler, worked over 1,000 metres with stablemates Captive Witness and Ex-Chantal and they clocked a respectable 1:04.10, with Right To Rule enjoying the trip.

Maiden War Of Words, who will appreciate the step up in distance in the Guineas, having finished a creditable, close-up third to Pot Of Gold in the Flamingo Stakes, breezed over 600 metres with stablemate Island Star and they recorded a time of 39.11.

Honour Roll, the first winning offspring for Triple Crown winner Top Of The Class, worked with stablemate Sweet Genius and they closed off in a "bullet" 35.90, with Sweet Genius heading in the right direction.

Chase The Dragon, formerly conditioned by Glenn Mendez and now handled by John O'Brien, blew away Jamaica-bred filly Lady Felisha in a 600-metre spin and turned in a good 36.00.

Importation Secret American, who finished third in the ARC Cup to Galveston, continues to show improvement and in a solo spin on Sunday morning, was very strong over 600 metres, covering the trip in 36.52.

Meanwhile, last year's Guineas winner Unquestionable was joined by the new addition to Shaffique Khan's stable, Red Lace, and they breezed over 1,000 metres in a good 1:02.94, with Red Lace dominating the workout.

Importation Golden Dixieland breezed alone with Ramsammy in the saddle and he closed off in a good 1:02.16 over the same trip and is one to follow on Saturday.
