Pres chasing First Citizens Chess hat-trick
Presentation College of Chaguanas will be going all out to score a hat-trick and retain the First Citizens Chess Championship Trophy on Saturday when the ninth annual Secondary Schools Chess Championship moves off from 9.30 a.m. at Pan American Life Insurance Plaza at Upper St Vincent Street, Port of Spain.
“Pres” have the experience of youth champion players, brothers Vishnu and Mahendra Singh, and will start as favourites and two-time defending champions.
Fatima College will also be seeking chess glory with the experienced Joshua Johnson in their ranks, while QRC have the talented trio of Sylvan Yearwood, Isaiah Thomas and Mark Skinner at the chessboard.
St Mary’s College, with Dimitri Pacheco and Jon-Raphael Sealy, and Holy Cross College, led by Gerard Sealy, will also fancy their chances.
But Naparima College will be very tough to beat when represented by newly FIDE rated players Simon Ramdath, Mikel Martin and Sean Bridglalsingh.
Among the girls’ schools St Joseph’s Convent (PoS) has a very strong team with national girls under-14 champion Gabriella Johnson and also including Shannon Yearwood and Della-Marie Walcott, while the steady Najarah Rahaman of South-East Port of Spain Secondary and Sadiqah Razark of Couva East Secondary will be challenging for the top female prizes.
