Pres beat 'Naps' to take SSCL title

By Kern De Freitas

Presentation College Chaguanas pulled off a 24-run triumph over contenders Naparima College in the PowerGen Secondary Schools Cricket League (SSCL) Premier Division at Presentation yesterday to clinch the 2012 title.

Presentation needed 50 overs to reach 169 for seven, but then restricted Naparima to 145 all out in 45.2 overs to seal victory.

Those 12 points, along with four bowling points for dismissing their opponents and two points for scoring more than 150, were enough to maintain their three-point advantage over defending champions Hillview College and hand "Pres" (139 points) the title.

Hillview (136 points) also won their encounter with Union Claxton Bay, but got the same number of points as Presentation and could not surpass them.

Hillview sent in UCB and they made 167 all out off 30 overs, with Stephen Rotan top-scoring with 56. Isaiah Rajah took three wickets and Brian Christmas and Jeremy Solozano two each.

Solozano returned with the bat and posted 96 not out in a 170-run opening stand with Dwayne Cockburn (58 not out), which sealed the victory, but not enough points to defend their title.

Pres had a harder time getting their win, with Keiron Joseph scoring a match-high 68 to lead them to 169 for seven. Then Aleem Khan and Kieron Joseph took three wickets each to dismiss "Naps" for 145 in 45.2 overs, despite Jovan Ali's knock of 55 and Jordan Samkarran's 31.

Despite their loss, Naparima finished third in the League.

El Dorado East Secondary also pulled off a four-run victory over Iere High School with "El Do's" Lyndell Nelson (five for 16) registering a hat-trick to close the match, and Fatima College eased past Shiva Boys Hindu College by eight wickets.

The other match between St Mary's College and Princes Town West was called off after a few overs due to problems with officials.
