Preysal can prove spoiler

By Roger Seepersad

Although they are fighting for survival in the bottom half of the Shanghai Construction Group (SCG) sponsored Premier Division table, CLICO Preysal could still play a role in deciding who finishes on top.

They host leaders Merry Boys at Inshan Ali Park, Preysal in round eight of the competition bowling off today at 10 a.m. and continuing tomorrow from 9.30 a.m.

For Preysal, who are in ninth place on 84 points, they held their nerve to beat Seenath’s Auto Bamboo Sports last weekend to revive their campaign and will be optimistic heading into the clash with one of the leading bowlers of the Regional Four-Day Championships Ryan Austin and West Indies Test batsman Narsingh Deonarine in their ranks.

Meanwhile Merry Boys (167 points) extended their lead at the top of the standings with victory over Esmeralda Sports in the previous round. They are now 32 points clear of Queen’s Park Cricket Club and defending champions PowerGen Sports and a victory this weekend will put them in a good position to clinch their first League title since 2008.

The Parkites host Alescon Comets at Queen’s Park Oval this weekend and regardless of what happens in the other matches, they need to win to keep pressure on the leaders. Queen’s Park though will be boosted by Darren Bravo’s return to form.

The left-hander scored 81 in the previous league game and stuck an unbeaten 103 in the mid-week Twenty20 match against Munroe Road. Skipper Justin Guillen also scored a century in the T20 games against Munroe Road.

PowerGen are on the road to last place Bamboo Sports and will need to be on their toes especially with Yannic Cariah in fine form having struck a half century in their previous game and century in the mid-week T20 fixture.

Elsewhere Caldrac Club received a boost after they were awarded 24 points for their round two match against Jenexcon Tableland.  They are now seventh on the table with 89 points and face tenth place Moosai Sports (66 points) at Honeymoon Park, El Dorado this weekend.

As a mark of respect for the passing of the former prime minister and president of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Arthur Napoleon Raymond Robinson, the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board have requested that all clubs observe a minute’s silence prior to the start of their matches today and that all players wear black arm-bands in Robinson’s honour.
