QPCC clash with PowerGen

Premier Division action resumes

By Roger Seepersad

Two of Trinidad and Tobago's most successful cricket clubs, Queen's Park Cricket Club (QPCC) and PowerGen Penal will square off this weekend in the third round of the T&T Cricket Board Premier Division competition at Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain.

The Parkites have won the Premier Division for the past two seasons and are chasing a hat-trick, while PowerGen were previous winners, taking the crown in 2009 and 2010.

Queen's Park, who are in second place on 49 points, are chasing their third win of the season but that will take an extra effort against fourth place PowerGen (36 points), who will be eager to bounce back after giving up first innings points in their drawn game against Esmeralda in the previous round.

Both teams have players on national and West Indies duty and will be banking on some of their younger cricketers to step up this weekend.

QPCC could be further depleted with injuries to left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein and Khary Pierre threatening their participation this weekend.

Pierre and Hosein have played key roles for the club in the absence of some of the senior players but they could miss this weekend's clash with hand injuries.

Queen's Park coach David Furlong said the club was still waiting for the all-clear from the doctor before they choose the final XI today.

Alescon Comets lead the 12-team standings with 59 points—just two points ahead of the Parkites—and they are likely to get 24 points this weekend.

Comets are scheduled to play W Connection Wanderers but Wanderers are unlikely to take the field again because of their ongoing legal battle with the TTCB.

Wanderers defaulted their previous two matches, giving their opponents 24 points and conceding minus ten.

Third place Moosai Sports are also in action this weekend, taking on Hafeez Karamath Limited Aranjuez Sports at Honeymoon Park, El Dorado.

Moosai drew their previous match against Merry Boys and will be looking to get maximum points against the newly promoted Aranjuez outfit if they are to be serious title contenders this season.

At the other end of the table, 2008 champions Merry Boys find themselves in the relegation zone with just 15 points from two matches.

They face winless F&E Diamond United at Diego Martin Recreation Ground.

All matches bowl off today at 10 a.m. and will continue tomorrow from 9:30 a.m.
