QPCC edge Petrotrin in Ventures Indoor

Defending Men's champions Petrotrin suffered a narrow 6-7 loss to arch rivals QPCC in their opening match of the tenth annual Ventures Hockey Club's Invitational International  Indoor Hockey Tournament at the Woodbrook Youth Facility, O'Connor Street, Thursday.

The reigning two-time national indoor champions came up just short as QPCC prevailed, led by a Lee Ron Tom Pak hattrick. Tom Pak got good support from Shawn Lee Quay and Khadeem Fortune who both scored doubles.

The Oilmen's Evan Farrell netted a beavertrick, but that proved not good enough while Wayne Legerton and Atiba Wittington chipped in with one each.

The biggest margin of victory on the opening day was the 18-2 whipping the Colin Thompson-coached Paragon, featuring the national senior women's quartet of Avion Ashton, Alanna Lewis, Zene Henry and Kristin Thompson inflicted on the visiting USA club Edge (Fear None I), coached by former national women's team coach, Kelvin "Koo" Nancoo.

Thompson had a personal tally of six goals. leading a procession of scorers, including Rolanda Cuffy-Bernard (four), Danielle Thompson (two), Avion Ashton (two) and one item each from Keima Gardiner, Alanna Lewis, Arielle Williams and Nikita Cudjoe.

Ashley Davis and Chelsea Davis scored one each for the Americans.

Paragon later trounced Fear None II 13-2, with Henry topscoring with five goals.

The competition continues today as the teams in the Open Divisions are competing for a top prize of US$1,000 each, plus a trophy and hampers while their will also be individual awards for the Most Valuable Player, Goalkeeper of the Tournament and Most Goals in each category.
