Quarter-final spots up for grabs in Sunday League

By Roger Seepersad

It will be a fight to the finish for some of the Premier Division teams today as they battle for a place in tomorrow's Sunday League quarter-finals.

The defending champions Queen's Park Cricket Club and last year's runners-up PowerGen Sports have already sealed their places in the knockout round but they will still want to end the group stage on a high and on top of the standings in their respective groups.

The Parkites (12 points) face First Citizens Clarke Road United (nine points) in a top-of-the-table clash in Group A at Wilson Road Recreation Ground, Penal, while 2012 runners up PowerGen (12 points) will be hosting newly-promoted Caldrac Club (three points) in the feature match in Group B at Syne Village Recreation Ground, also in Penal.

Clarke Road's place in the quarters is also secure but they will be hoping to pull off a win and go top of Group A to get an easier draw in the quarters.

The top team in Group A will face the fourth placed side in Group B, while the second placed team in the Group A will play the third placed team in Group B in the quarter-finals.

Also already securing places in the next round are Merry Boys (nine points) and Seenath's Auto Bamboo Sports (eight points) in Group B.

The two sides will meet in the final group stage match today but the result will only confirm who will finish as the higher placed team in the Group.

Alescon Comets should also secure the final quarter-final spot in Group B today.

They are scheduled to take on W Connection Wanderers in their final group game but Wanderers have forfeited all of their matches so far and are unlikely to play today.

Group A is less clear-cut with Esmeralda, Moosai Sports and F&E Diamond United fighting for the final two qualifying spots.

Moosai and Esmeralda are on six points each and they face off at Honeymoon Park today, while Diamond are on three points and could secure a place into the next round if they can improve their net run rate and win their final group match against HKL Aranjuez Sports at Kennedy Park, Diamond Village today.

Diamond got a life-line when they upset Clarke Road in Round three last Saturday with Guyana batsman Jonathan Foo hitting and unbeaten 151 to bring home the win.

They will be hoping Foo can lead them to big win and a place in the quarter-finals.

All matches bowl off at 10 a.m.
