Point guard Pietra Gay scored the last three points—a lay-up and a free-throw—in the final 23 seconds which guided Quarters United to an exciting 70-69 win over Police in the women's division of the Mackeson Super 10 Basketbal League at Maloney Indoor Sports Complex on Wednesday night.
Quarters are now 2014 women's champions after winning the best-of-five final by a 3-1 margin.
The game was keenly contested from the jump-ball. Police needed to win to keep their title hopes alive and took a 19-16 first quarter lead, but in the second quarter, favourites Quarters went on a 11-3 run, guard Donnette Reed scoring 16 of her game-high 23 points, to lead them to a 34-30 half-time lead.
The third quarter was very close and ended with Quarters only leading 52-50.
The fourth session was a see-saw affair and despite losing power forward Melissa Guerero by the foul-out route, Quarters held-on for the win after Police centre Alicia Liverpool missed a lay-up from very close to the basket with two seconds to go.
For Quarters, guards Donnette Reed and former WNBA player Pietra Gay scored 23 and 17 points, respectively.
Police were losing the championship match for a second consecutive season.
