RAMPAUL OUT

T&T pacer misses opening regional game

By Roger Seepersad

Pacer Ravi Rampaul, veteran off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth and former captain Daren Ganga were the significant omissions in an otherwise full-strength Trinidad and Tobago 13-man squad for the first round of the regional four-day tournament, which bowls off next Friday.

T&T, who were losing semi-finalists last year, face losing finalists Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) in the first day-night match of the competition at 3Ws Oval in Barbados and even without Rampaul, Ganga and Jaggernauth will still boast a formidable team.

Rampaul is nursing an ankle injury, while Ganga is recovering from a back ailment and Jaggernauth was unavailable for the opening round.

Also missing from the squad are all-rounder Sherwin Ganga, spinner Dave Mohammed and opener Justin Guillen.

However, new skipper Denesh Ramdin will still have an experienced line-up at his disposal with the likes of West Indies players Lendl Simmons, Adrian Barath, Darren Bravo, Dwayne Bravo, Jason Mohammed, Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard all in the mix.

Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board chairman of selectors Dudnath Ramkessoon believes T&T have a formidable squad, but is warning against complacency, especially on the heels of the national team's successful Caribbean Twenty20 campaign, which ended with their 63-run win over Jamaica in the final on Sunday at Kensington Oval in Barbados.

"Yes, the team is strengthened with seasoned campaigners, but we cannot be complacent," he said. "Games are not won on paper. We have to perform so the players need to recognise that they are playing four-day cricket and have to be mindful about their shot selection and making sure they don't give it away.

"We are hoping that with the experience and calibre of players we have that we can get a good performance and start the campaign positively and build of the success in the T20," added Ramkessoon.

"We are on a high and that spirit and enthusiasm and intensity the team displayed in the final, we hope that will carry into the four-day game."

Narine and Yannic Cariah are the only relatively new players in the four-day line-up and there is already a lot expected of the duo in the absence of seasoned veteran off-spinner Jaggernauth.

The other bowlers in the team are Rayad Emrit, who was T&T's second leading wicket-taker behind Jaggernauth last season with 25 wickets, Shannon Gabriel, who took 23 wickets last year, and Imran Khan, who collected 24 wickets in 2011.

Jaggernauth had 27 wickets in last season's tournament.

Narine, 23, made his first class debut in 2009 and has only played three first class matches, picking up three wickets, while 19-year-old Cariah made his debut last year and played four matches, taking 13 wickets.

Of the young spinners, Ramkessoon said: "Yannic has been knocking on the door for a while now and he spins the ball and Narine has established himself on the West Indies team and has distinguished himself in the shorter version.

"Narine has made tremendous strides over the last year and we are looking to see if he commands a place in the longer version. We expect that he will go from strength to strength and, in time, establish himself and show he can be effective in the longer version of the game.

"We also have Rayad Emrit, Dwayne Bravo, Shannon Gabriel and Imran Khan, so we have a number of players who can carry the team's bowling," Ramkessoon concluded.

The T&T players will be in action for their respective National League clubs tomorrow and Sunday as the Sunday League 50-over competition gets underway and the national team will leave for Barbados on Tuesday.
