RBC INVESTORS finally suffered their first defeat when the Tranquillity Square Tennis Club’s Intra-Club Team Doubles Tennis Tournament continued on Friday at the club’s courts, Victoria Avenue, Port of Spain.
Going into the fourth round as the only unbeaten team, Investors, led by two-time defending Tranquillity Open veterans’ (over-45) singles champion and recently–elected Tennis Association of Trinidad and Tobago (TATT) president Kendall Cuffy, were shut out 3-0 by Emile Elias Warriors.
Investors began the day with six points and in joint first position with Vitamalt Energisers, but are now fourth in the six-team competition.
The top four teams will advance to the semifinals after the last three matches in the round-robin phase are contested from 4.15 p.m. today.
Investors are two points clear of the fifth-placed PWC Checkers, but they will not reach the last four if they go down 3-0 against Energisers and Checkers prevail by the same margin against Guardian Angels, who have lost their four fixtures and have only scraped three points.
The Athelastan Phillips-led Angels were beaten 3-0 on Friday by Blue Waters Crystals, and have no chance of reaching the semis.
Crystals, led by former national champion Keith Thomasos and former “Tranquil” runner-up and Davis Cup player Rick Avey, have accumulated eight points and are at the top of the table, along with Richard McLetchie and company of Energisers.
Both teams are through to the semis, along with Warriors, who are a point adrift.
Today’s other fixture will be between Warriors and Crystals.
The Tranquillity Club has been in existence for over 100 years, and this inaugural tournament is open only to their members.
