Ramirez, Lestrade top TTARP 5K

Denzel Ramirez of the Defence Force may have been under the radar, but that was before Saturday's Trinidad & Tobago Association of Retired Persons (TTARP) 5K, when he ran like the wind to secure victory in 15 minutes, nine seconds, announcing that he is ready to stake his claim for honours in Sunday's UWI SPEC International Half-Marathon.

Kelvin Johnson, the second man home, showed that he too was in good nick, clocking 15:22 in sunny conditions. Johnson's time was a big improvement on his 2011 clocking—16:30.

Also under 16 minutes on Saturday were Lionel Dandrade, third in 15:40, and Jules La Rode, fourth in 15:44. Sterlen Paul (16:02) was fifth, and Kent Baboolal (16:04), sixth. Volwin Mercurius (16:26), Colin Perreira (16:56), Cantius Thomas (17:16), and Denny Gualbance (17:21) rounded off the top ten.

Celine Lestrade was the first woman to complete the five-kilometre course, which started and finished at the TTARP building on Belmont Circular Road, making a loop around the Queen's Park Savannah.

Lestrade clocked 19:23, for a huge cushion on second-placed Shania Francis (21:57). Zara Suite-Stewart (22:08) finished third, ahead of Elia Nero (23:25), Claudine Antoine (24:03), Alana Lee Wo (24:15), Glenn Moore (24:26), Christine Farah (24:29), Keisha Lindsay (24:30), and Rosamund Jolly (25:22).
