Baptiste makes Junior Olympics B standard

By Mark Pouchet

Marlins’ Christian Marsden and Arieos Aquatechs’ Vrisnelit Faure broke the first two records of the meet Saturday.
And yesterday morning, Marlins’ Jabari Baptiste also achieved a B standard for the Junior Olympics in Nanjing, China later this year.
When the fourth night of the 2014 Amateur Swimming Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ASATT) National Long Course Age Group Swimming Championships continued Saturday evening at the Marlins Olympic-sized pool in Westmoorings, Faure posted the first record of the five-day meet with a 37.23-second Girls 11-12 50 metres breaststroke mark. Faure’s effort was also a Carifta mark, one of 16 attained on the day.
The time beat Rejan Chin’s 2006 time of 37.83.
Marsden broke the 13-year old record of Nicholas Bovell when he clocked nine minutes, 07.77 seconds in the 16-lap Boys 13-14 800m freestyle event. Bovell’s previous mark was 9:08.08.
And yesterday, Baptiste splashed to 56.75 in the Boys 15-17 100m butterfly which was not only a Carifta A standard but also qualified him for the Junior Olympics.
Jada Chai of Atlantis Aquatics again had two Carifta A qualification times.
She stormed to victories in the Girls 11-12 200m free (2:17.79) and 100m back (1:13.69).
The two other A standards came through Centre of Excellence Sea Hawks’ Justin Samlalsingh who sped to 1:03.05 in the Boys 13-14 100m backstroke while Baptiste did the same in the Boys 15-17 edition of the event, clocking 1:00.36.
There were eight B standards achieved Saturday.
Tidal Wave Aquatics’ (TWA’s) Jahmia Harley secured two in the Girls 11-12 100m back (1:16.43) and 200m free (2:19.81) while Luke Gillette sped to 37.15 in the Boys 11-12 50m breast.
Atlantis Aquatics’ Jeron Thompson and Blue Dolphins’ Dario Omiss completed the Boys 13-14 40m breast in 32.43 and 33.10 respectively to book their places, while Marlins’ James Gillette notched a Carifta B time in the Boys 13-14 100m back in 1:05.73.
Faure with a Girls 11-12 200m individual medley (IM) time of 2:42.85 and David McLeod—1:00.74 Boys 15-17 100m back--rounded out the Carifta B qualifiers.
Faure also had a C time for the Girls 11-12 200m free (2:26.10) as did Gillette (L) (2:40.98) and TWA’s Aqeel Joseph (2:41.02) in the Boys 11-12 200m IM.
