Arun Roopnarine and Aaron Wilson were in winners' row on the opening day of the Silver Bowl Junior Table Tennis Championships at Maloney Indoor Complex, yesterday.
Roopnarine repeated as boys' under-21 champion, the Arima Hawks player getting the better of Sarvesh Mungal 11-5, 11-4, 11-6 in the final.
In the semi-final round, Roopnarine beat Davone Joseph 11-6, 7-11, 11-2, 11-6, and Mungal stopped Lawrence Ince at 4, 6 and 9.
Wilson retained his boys' under-15 title with a straight games dismissal of Guyana's Kyle Edghill, the Carenage Blasters player cruising home 11-6, 11-2, 11-5.
Wilson was equally clinical in the semis, whipping Shaquille Mitchell 11-7, 11-1, 11-5. Edghill booked his spot in the final with an 11-6, 11-5, 11-5 triumph over fellow-Guyanese Miguel Wong.
In stark contrast to the boys' final, the girls' under-15 championship match was a very competitive contest. Bishop's High School, Tobago player Jasher De Gannes was extended to five games by Guyana's Priscilla Greaves, but eventually prevailed 11-8, 12-14, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7.
In the semi-final round, De Gannes beat Ray J Thomas 7-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-3, and Greaves defeated Gyshan Latchman 11-7, 11-8, 11-13, 7-11, 11-3.
Brandon Lee Young held on to his boys' under-11 crown, the Maloney Tigers player beating Messiah Walcott 8-11, 11-0, 11-3, 11-6 in the final.
Lee Young got a scare in the semis, battling back from 2-1 down in games to defeat Derron Douglas 11-8, 10-12, 9-11, 11-8, 11-4. On the other side of the draw, Walcott stopped Aaron Amoroso 11-8,
11-4, 11-1.
And in the girls' under-11 event, St Andrew's Anglican (Tobago) player Shurja Welch struck gold, bouncing back from a first game blanking in the championship match to beat Guyana's Nevaeh Clarkston 0-11, 11-7, 11-7, 16-18, 11-7.
Welch outlasted Shreya Maharaj
13-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9 in one semifinal. And in the other, Clarkston made light work of 2012 champion Ackayla Lucas, the Guyanese player winning 11-2, 11-4,
11-4.
The Silver Bowl Junior Championships continue from 9.30 this morning, at Maloney. All eyes will be on the boys' under-18 event, and the highly anticipated showdown between Roopnarine and Wilson.
